No one likes to see stains on their carpet. The sad reality of life is that we cannot avoid accidents. You will have carpet stains at some point regardless of how careful you are.
The most important thing is to know is what to do when stains appear on your carpet. Our first instinct is to rush to the spot on your carpet and quickly scrub off the stains. However, is that the best way to go about it? Let’s look at whether you should blot or scrub carpet stains.
If you have spilled liquid on your carpet, then do not, by any means first scrub the area. The best solution for getting liquids off your carpet fibers is blotting. Use a paper towel or an ordinary towel to blot the stain. Try to remove as much stain as you can by blotting.
After that, you can try to rub the area to get rid of the remaining stain. If you start by rubbing the area before blotting, then you will spread the stain to other areas of the carpet. These are some of the tips you can apply when spot cleaning your carpet.
When blotting the area with the stain, use your heel to press down on the location you are blotting. Do this using dry towels until you are sure there is no liquid left on the carpet. If the spill is in a larger area, then a wet-dry vacuum will get rid of most of the mess before you start blotting.
After you have blotted the area, you need to come up with a solution that you will use to clean the area. You can use the hand-washing soap (the clear one) mixed with water. ¼ for every quart should be enough. Avoid using laundry detergent to clean the area because their alkalinity will damage your carpet.
Stay away from the hand-dishwashing with the creamy color because they are sticky and your carpet may be left with a sticky residue which may attract dirt and grime leading to more stains.
If the spill on your carpet is colored then clean water is the best liquid for cleaning it. You can use clean water to mist it. A wet towel is also crucial in blotting it. When you use a wet towel, you can follow it up with a dry towel. The wet and dry towel methods will help to get rid of the residue. Avoid scrubbing in this case because it may mat the carpet fibers.
When removing stains from your carpet, it is always advisable to begin by removing the solids on the carpet followed by blotting up the liquids. Do these processes twice or thrice and then bring in your cleaning solution. A stain may appear difficult to get rid of, but the steps mentioned above can work some magic.
When you follow the steps, you will save yourself from doing additional work. However, if the stain doesn’t seem to come out after the first steps, clean it using soapy water. Afterward, rinse and perform the cleaning action again (using soapy water). Once you see that the stain is not fading away anymore, continue with the rest of the instructions.
